There may not be flashing disco lights, a comedic host or campy sound effects, but the city of Binghamton now has its own Cash Cab roaming the streets of Downtown.

In Binghamton, Ralph E. Boone, Jr. is our Ben Bailey, quizzing students on their Southern Tier and New York state knowledge. Always looking to make his clientele happy, Boone officially kicked off his new Cash Cab program last week. He started the game to please one of his Binghamton University clients who told him she would love to have a Cash Cab on campus.

“The point is to get the students more informed about their community,” Boone said.

While Boone is not actually giving away large amounts of money, he still provides a bit of entertainment on the way back to school from Downtown.

“Students can get a free ride for answering an easy question,” Boone said.

Allison Feldman, a sophomore environmental science major, rode in the Cash Cab last weekend.

“It was very fun and enjoyable,” Feldman said. “It was a nice change of pace from the regular taxi ride where the driver is mean and rude and clearly just wants to make money.”

Boone was born in Plant City, Fla. and grew up in New York state. He has lived in the Binghamton area for the last 30 years. Although he initially became a taxi driver to supplement his income, he has since begun to consider it more of a job through which he can help people — especially students at BU.

“Students should be treated fair and respected,” Boone said.

Cab

He sees his job primarily as a service to the students, not solely as a moneymaking venture, as he is against the practice of overloading cabs and will never drive around campus looking to fill his taxi.

When Is Cash Cab On

“If there are three people who want a ride Downtown, then I will take them and come back,” Boone said. “It’s about serving the students, not making an extra $10 by packing them in.”

In order to avoid overloading, Boone said that you should call ahead if you have more than six people who need a ride, and he would be more than willing to send two cars. While this might take more planning than some are capable of on a Friday night after an hour of pregaming, at least you won’t have to sit on a stranger’s lap.

To make the students happier, Boone said he reduced his rate to go Downtown to $2 per person, a change that has been met with some opposition from his fellow cabbies. In fact, it actually makes him slightly notorious in the cab community. Other drivers frequently ask him why he bothers charging students less when they obviously don’t care about him.

“Not true,” Boone said. “I have a good following. I have no problems with kids tearing up my stuff. When you start to act like it’s not just a job and make changes, (other cabbies) try to crush you out.”

Cash Cab Rules

When his dispatcher began taking away his calls because he was trying to be fairer to his clients, he formed his own company and named it Integrity. Instead of letting the competition control his business, Boone said he is determined to maintain the highest standards at the best price. Boone said he takes great pride in his profession and is very interested in cleaning up the local taxi industry.

“When people first come to town, they see the taxis,” he said. “Our cabs make the first impression on visitors so the drivers shouldn’t harass potential riders and they should keep their cars clean.”
